I created this blog to provide a reference source for anyone interested in improving their heat pump systems diagnostic skills. My service career spans near 40 years so I’ve seen a lot of stuff and can offer some insight. I have always strived to expand my personal knowledge base so as to better understand heat pump design and operation but I’m still learning.
Socrates said, “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” Over the years, I would at times begin thinking I had “seen it all” and then confront some issue I had never seen. For certain, all the stuff you see in the field is explainable through all the science and engineering behind the design but sometimes, we don’t fully understand the science well enough to recognize the explanation. You don’t have to be a scientist or engineer to diagnose heat pump problems, you just need to understand what they do and how they do it.
It’s not in my plans to attempt to teach “Refrigeration 101” or “Heat Pumps 101”. I will assume most techs who show up already have the basics behind them and just need assistance on a particular issue or clarification of some aspect of the basics. I will offer some practical approaches for understanding heat pump operation that might be helpful but will also attempt to answer any questions anyone might have about any particular topic.
